Frugal Friday: Jute Mirror Knockoff Edition

Happy Friday!  I’m back with another Frugal Friday for you all this week!

My entryway is something that I have big dreams for.  I talked a little about the plans for it here and now I am finally starting to spruce it up a bit 🙂  For the record, it’s unorganized again because I haven’t figured out a good system for our family yet.  I’m getting there, promise!

Anyways.  I had a moment the other night, where I asked John to recycle a metal-look plastic tray that we had from a baby shower we hosted that week.  I was all “I’m trying not to be a hoarder so please take it to the recycling” and then, less than 2 minutes later, I was all “You didn’t bend that tray or anything did you???”.  He’s totally used to my antics, so he was not phased when I went to grab it out of the recycle bin.  He doesn’t even ask questions anymore.

I’ve been brainstorming something I could do on the wall at the bottom of our stairs.  It’s a spot we pass pretty frequently and it was totally blank!  As, John was taking the tray out to the garage, I was quickly scrolling my brain rolodex for a way I could use it, and I thought of my entryway.

I am always seeing these jute mirrors, but they are sort of outrageously priced.

Um. Yeah.  Not about to spend that much for one mirror.  So, enter the cheapy tray from Kroger!  I grabbed my trusty friend (glue gun), some jute twine (from Hobby Lobby), and the tray and got to work!

I started on the edge, and glued a little bit of twine at a time all the way around the tray.  Ignore my terrible nails!  I’ve been biting them lately for no good reason except that I read all three Divergent books and it had me on edge and also, I couldn’t believe the ending! Anyone else???

Then, I just kept going round and round until I got to the little indent on the flat part of the tray.  That’s pretty much it!  I ran out of hot glue (rookie) halfway through, so I switched to Aleene’s Tacky glue.  It worked just as well, but took longer since it doesn’t dry instantly.  Make sure you glue along your entire piece of jute, where ever it is touching the tray.  Otherwise it gets all slip-slidey on you.  Nobody wants that.

I flipped it over and put a Command strip on the back to hang it up on the wall.  Love these things!  They are so great for people who can’t make up their minds and don’t want to put a million little holes in the wall.  That would be me.

Boom!  This baby cost me nothing and they wanted $390 on Wayfair.  Even if you don’t have the tray and jute twine, it would cost you probably less than $7 which is still an insane amount of savings.  And, if you wanted it to be an actual mirror, you could scoop up a dollar store circular mirror (found by the candles and such at Dollar Tree) and glue it in the center.  Just be sure to wrap your twine all the way to the edge of your mirror.  I’m still debating if I want to do that or not.  I’m going to live with it like this for a bit and then decide.  I’ll keep you updated.

What do you guys think??  Have you been digging through your trash lately? Am I just a weirdo?

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I’ll be back next week with a few other things I incorporated around the mirror in the entryway! 🙂  Have a fabulous weekend!

xo
