Entryway Organization – Phase 1

I know, I know.  I keep posting “phase 1” type organizing posts.  And by keep, I mean this is my second one.  Sorry, guys!  This is my life.  I am so scatter-brained that I can’t just stick to one project at a time.  If I see something is getting out of hand, I have to do a quick fix until I really think about what I want to do with the space.

Here is what I was looking at that was driving me crazy.  By the way, this has to be the most awkward/dark space to photograph.

Entryway 2

I’m the guilty party here.  That coat rack in the corner is full of all of my coats (and Alex’s, but who can blame him?).  And it seems to be time to find a solution for cold weather gear (hats, scarves, gloves, etc.)

So, my first step was to clear off the coat rack except for one coat each.  The cold weather gear bucket is from Dollar Tree and it was in my craft room, but it was basically empty so I stole it!  The baby carrier is still there only because it isn’t mine and I didn’t want it to get sucked into the black-hole entry closet =]

Entryway 3

I put all of Alex’s shoes into a basket since they are really too small to go on the shoe rack and they end up piled on the floor.

Entryway 5

I hung Luna’s things up on the back of the door because they tended to get lost on the coat rack.  I just used Command hooks to hang everything up for the time being.  These are GREAT for phase 1 type organizing so you don’t end up with a zillion holes in your walls while you figure out what will work.

I even used the hangers and hung up our extra coats.

Now, eventually I need to clear off the games and other random things on that upper shelf.  I would like to do something like this (from Organize 365) in here to make it more open and functional.  Instead of the bench inside I would like to put in some shoe racks that go from wall to wall.  I’m thinking of moving the broom and mop into the laundry room and getting a hanger especially for those items like this.

I also really like this (from Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom) for that awkward corner.  I plan  on using two of our Ikea Lack Tables to make a cube like this for the “bench” part.  That way I can tuck our little green bucket inside and out of the way.

We are also planning on painting the hallway a light turquoise/blue/gray similar to this to give it a little life.

So for now, it’s functional and not such a mess, but by no mean is it finished.  Shall we recap my to-do list?

  • Paint walls (and inside closet?)
  • Make Lack cube
  • Hang hooks inside closet and in awkward corner
  • Build wall to wall shoe racks in closet
  • Clear out games and random stuff on shelves
  • Hang hooks on back of closet door for Luna’s things
  • Move broom and mop into laundry room

No big deal, right?  Everything should be fairly inexpensive and hopefully it will be so much more functional for us!  I can’t wait to show you the full reveal whenever I finish it =]

Have you guys been doing any small-type organizing projects?  Is your entryway a mess like mine?
