Shared Boys Room Plan

The boys are sharing a room full-time now and loving it!  If anybody is on the fence about having your kids share a room, DO IT!  It’s so good for them to share a space with someone!  I still had Christian napping in his pack-n-play, until recently, when Alex stopped napping (moment of silence, please.).  Now he is napping in his crib-turned-toddler-bed and sleeping SO.MUCH.BETTER.   Apparently he was waking himself up because he was too big for the pack-n-play.  Whoops!  Everybody is happier when nap time rolls around now.

Alex still calls it his room, so John and I wanted to give it a little makeover so Christian felt just as welcome there!  We are keeping the “theme” along the same lines — Buckeyes and sports — but classing it up a bit so it will grow up with them a bit.  I hate to admit that my boys are growing up, but I will be putting TWO twin beds in there.  No more toddler bed.  No more crib!  Wahhhhh!

So, to start, our plan is to paint the walls a very light gray to make it feel larger.  I’m afraid that with two beds it might start to feel small and I really don’t love the color of the room at all.  Alex also destroyed the wall along his bed with his nightlight, so there is some patching that needs to happen.

We’ve (John, my dad, and brother-in-law) already installed a fan in there because it gets so hot during the summer–even with the air on!  Function over form in this case, but it’s a million times better than the old light we had in there!  Plus, the boys are so excited to have a fan in their room like mommy and daddy 🙂  We’ve also already added new curtains from Target which we desperately needed!  We got these rugby striped blackout curtains from the new Pillowfort line.  They are a lifesaver during nap and now that the sun is up so much later!  The gray is much lighter in person and the curtains are not shiny like they seem in the picture.  In case you were wondering 🙂

John’s big project for in here is to build a couple of platforms for the boys’ mattresses.  We are keeping the existing furniture and John will build a matching headboard for Christian to attach to the platforms.  I want to get rid of the box spring so they are closer to the ground.  Christian has a tendency to fall out of bed, so I want him to be as close to the ground as possible!  We will be making up the plans for the headboard and using these plans from Ana White for the platform.  I’m still undecided on how to finish the pieces.  Since Alex’s headboard is already stained, I’m inclined to paint them so that everything matches, but I am also looking into using Polyshades so I can keep the natural wood look.  Decisions, decisions.

I want their beds to be super cozy.  Alex loves to snuggle up with no less than 4 blankets and two pillows.  Here is my vision.  Have you seen the new Pillowfort line at Target??  To die for.  Clearly it was everything I didn’t know I needed for their room because I want it all.  The lamp is an idea I found on Pinterest (from Smart Girl Style) and I thought would be a great idea since my kids tend to destroy regular lamps.  This one is just a work clamp light that she spray painted!  Love it!

Above their beds I want a monogram each (from Target) which I already have planned out and can’t wait to share with you all!  I’m also playing around with ideas for a gallery wall.  It’s a pretty big wall and I don’t want anything to get lost on it.  I definitely want to include some photos of them together (which are getting hard to come by! Nobody sits still long enough!), an actual chalkboard with a football play drawn on it and of course I will be making them a sign (the I solemnly swear one is a mock up of what I want to make for them).  That red star from Hobby Lobby will add a fun pop of color too!  And I love that sign I found on Etsy with the Where the Wild Things Are quote, so hopefully I can make that happen 🙂

Boys Room Art Inspiration

I want the room to be pretty symmetrical because, as anybody with more than one kid knows, whatever one has, the other has to have as well!  On either end of the room, I want to put some industrial type shelves and let them pick a few things to put up on them.  I’ve been feeling so inspired by the lovely shelving I see on Pinterest!  The first is from Design, Dining and Diapers and the second is from Cherished Bliss.

So, just a few things to tackle in here!  Hahaha!  Let us recap shall we?Boys room to-do

I definitely want this to be totally done before baby Madison arrives in July!  I think it’s totally possible 🙂  I’m having so much fun planning out this room for the boys!
