Since we updated our kitchen cabinets (2 years ago??? Where did that time go??) we’ve been pondering what exactly to do with the lighting situation in there. We have a totally 90s fluorescent box light that really keeps our kitchen bright, so we needed a solution that still made our kitchen super well lit. We toyed with the idea of putting in can lights with some sort of pendants over the island and may still do that down the road when we are feeling more committed. For now, we made our 90s light a million times better with a few coats of paint!
This light stuck out like a sore thumb. It was the first thing you saw when you walked into the kitchen, which was definitely not the goal when we spent months painting our cabinets! John suggested that we just paint it the same color as the cabinets (Benjamin Moore – Simply White) so that it blended in. I was sold! I mean, I couldn’t get worse, right?
I started by taking down the decorative grate and plastic light cover.
I gave it and the actual box on the ceiling two coats of primer (Kilz oil based primer).
And then two coats of paint. I put it all back together once it was dry and I’m super happy with the results! It’s definitely not the prettiest light, but now it sort of gets lost in the ceiling (which is a good thing in this case!).
It’s no longer the first thing you see and blends seamlessly with our cabinets (yay for leftover paint!). It’s the perfect project when you are on a budget but want to make your kitchen look like a million bucks!
