Simple Felt Wreath

felt wreath 3

I’ve got the Christmas itch! My feeds have been full of Christmas crafts, trees, wreaths, and gift ideas. I was trying to hold out, and I made it about 4 days longer than I usually do before I started decorating for my favorite holiday. Usually John wakes up on November 1 to a Christmas tree in the living room. Baby steps, right?

When I saw this adorable felt wreath that Gina posted at The Shabby Creek Cottage, I couldn’t wait any longer. It was exactly what I had in mind for a first, easy project! Plus, it’s always a bonus when you know you already have all the supplies because you are a craft hoarder keep the craft room stocked.

I loved her solid gray wreath, but knew I wanted to give it some color.  So I went to my felt stash and pulled out three shades of green and an oatmeal color.

I started out cutting up all my felt.  I used almost 4 sheets (I say almost because a few of the sheets already had some cuts from the making of Christian’s woodland mobile) of felt that is like, 25 cents a sheet.  This will seriously be the most inexpensive wreath you ever make.  Ever.  You can see the full tutorial of how to cut out your felt leaves over at The Shabby Creek Cottage.

Once I had all of my leaves cut out, I picked up the piece of foam core board that the boys had been destroying playing with off the floor and decided that would be good for the base to glue my leaves to.  I told you this would be inexpensive.  Even if you don’t have a piece of foam board that your kids are playing with, they are $1 at Dollar Tree.  Maybe even 2/$1.  I can’t remember.  I digress.  You can also use a cardboard box!

I put one of my mixing bowls upside down and traced it onto the board.  It was supposed to be the outside of the circle, but I decided it wasn’t big enough so, I winged it and free-handed another circle around that one.  In the end, my outer circle is 15 1/2″ in diameter and the inner circle is 11″.  It doesn’t have to be perfect because you are going to cover it in leaves!

Now comes the fun part!  Make sure you do a dry run (aka don’t just start gluing your leaves down!) first because I for sure ran out of leaves and only had 2/3 of my foam covered.  Glad I took my own advice 🙂  So, lay the leaves out how you like them and once you have that all situated, get out your trusty best friend (your hot glue gun) and start gluing!

Once all the leaves were glued down, I attached a piece of twine for hanging on the back with the hot glue.

And there you have it!   A really adorable and simple wreath to kick of your Christmas decorating.  Mine is going to live in the kitchen on the pantry door for the season.

Have you started decorating for Christmas yet or are you totally opposed to it?  I feel like some people are really hardcore about this decision.  I just really like getting to enjoy my Christmas decorations for a few months, plus Christmas decor makes my heart happy 🙂

I’m so grateful you stopped by!

xo,

Sam
