Well, it’s finally time for me to finish Alex’s nursery. I mean…start Alex’s big kid room. Um, you know what I mean.
I never got around to finishing the decorations in Alex’s nursery. Luckily he never noticed. Phew! I had way too many ideas floating around and way too much wall space to fill, it made me nervous. But, everything I had planned for his nursery will, thankfully, transfer right over to his big kid room.
His room is (or will be) Ohio State Buckeye theme (John’s pick!). I really want to keep it from getting to themey though. So, sorry hunny, probably no Brutus FatHead on the wall. I have been trying to keep their colors (scarlet and gray) consistent throughout, while mixing in some other neutrals so it doesn’t start looking like a stadium.
Lately, big graphic number art has been catching my eye. I thought it would be a perfect fit in Alex’s room. The numbers I chose, 4 and 7, are John and my soccer numbers, respectively, from when we played in college. I thought it was a great idea. I did have to explain to John and my dad why I chose those numbers, so maybe it’s only awesome to me. My mom understood right away though, so perhaps the sentimental female mind will get where I was going with this?? Anyways, 4 and 7 it is!
I had two of these canvases from our now obsolete guest bedroom, so I thought I could use them for this project! I’m always about reusing and saving some dough =] And yes, I do frequently get help from Thomas (& Friends) characters during the day.
After peeling the toilet paper roll flowers off, I was left with flower shaped glue lines. Not ideal for a big boy sport theme room. I tried razor blading the glue off and thought I had done a pretty good job, but after the first coats of paint, you could definitely still see the flowers. It’s hard to see in the pictures, but it was clear that there used to be flowers on these canvases. Look closely, or back up, whichever. It’s like one of those Magic Eye puzzles. Remember those??
So, I tried a second, thicker coat and it did the trick pretty well. It didn’t totally cover up the flowers, but it definitely takes your eye away from the floral motif.
I let those dry overnight since the paint was so thick. Also, it was already 10pm, so I was definitely going to bed.
I then created my numbers using Microsoft Publisher. I love this because I just created a page the size of my canvas and was able to really visualize what size number I wanted and where I wanted to place it. Oh, the things I have been missing using a Mac. Don’t worry, I still love my Mac and can’t wait to have it back eventually!
So, I printed them out, taped them together and cut out the numbers to create my makeshift stencil. Then I just arbitrarily placed them on each canvas and lightly outlined with pencil.
Next came the filling in. Which is pretty self-explanatory. I chose red for the 7 and a dark gray for the 4.
Here they are all finished and in the room. They are temporarily hanging out on Alex’s big-boy bed (it’s not in use yet) because I want to get all of the furniture in there before I start hanging stuff up.

Aaaaand he is unimpressed. Or he was just more interested in jumping and running on the bed.
I just finished up another project for his room that I’m pretty proud of and John just tackled something for him as well! I can’t wait to share them with you, probably next week sometime. Pretty soon, his big boy room will be all set up! I can’t even.
Anybody else crying uncontrollably because their baby is not a baby anymore? How about just painting some really sweet artwork?
